23 Things I’ve Learned In My Early 20’s

As I approach my 24th birthday and slowly start kissing my early 20’s goodbye!  I started to reflect on everything I’ve learned these last few years. I know turning 24 isn’t as big of a deal as turning 25. But, for someone who is obsessed with birthdays, especially my own, it is a big deal! I like to think that every year you become one year wiser, especially in your 20’s. My early 20’s was filled with break ups, make ups, and learning to be confident within in myself. I wanted to share with you 23 things I’ve learned thus far, to celebrate entering my Mid 20’s! 

  1. Don’t let not getting your dream job rain on your parade! 
    • Instead, you should be celebrating that you even got a job. Yes, it might not be your dream job but you’re working towards getting that amazing job! 
  2. Don’t accept a job just because you’re tired of those rejection emails! 
    • You don’t want to accept the first job offer you get! You want to make sure you’ll like where you’ll be working. Ask more questions that are important to you during the job interview. So, when that offer does come in you’re 100% percent okay with working for that company. 
  3.     Don’t freak out if life doesn’t go according to plan!
    •  I’m a hardcore Life Planner, or at least I used to be! Before graduating from college, I had a plan that I never thought I would have to change in any way. Well that, of course, wasn’t the case! My Life plan was to, graduate within 4 years, get that amazing Public Relation job right after college, and get my own apartment. Well, none of that happened! At first, I started to stress myself out and feel a little disappointed. This wasn’t a good feeling, so I decided to look at life differently and stop trying to make everything go according to “plan”. I’ve learned that you can’t control everything that happens in life and that’s 100% okay!
  4. Don’t compare yourself to other people! 
    • I know this one is hard, and I still struggle with this. But, just keep reminding yourself how AWESOME you are.
  5. Try to look on the bright side of that crappy situation!
  6. Be confident in yourself! 
  7. Don’t apologize for being yourself! 
  8. Speak your mind!
    • I’m all for a good Treat Yo Self day. But, don’t overdo it! It’s okay to buy that new Kate Spade handbag you’ve been eyeing and eating amazing food. But, it’s another to make yourself completely broke the next day. So, find that perfect balance. 
  10. Don’t bring all your keys with you when you’re going out!
    • Trust me, if you plan on going out and having fun you don’t need to bring all your keys. I’ve lost all my keys including my car keys at a bar and it wasn’t fun trying to get everything back. 
  11. You don’t need a new outfit for every event you go to. 
    • Don’t get me wrong I love shopping! But if you’re trying to save money learn to mix and match all the stuff you already have in your closet. On the bright side, you can use the money you’ll be saving on another Treat Yo Self day!  
  12. You don’t have to keep being friends with someone just because you’ve known each other for years. It’s okay to call it quits if they aren’t good for you!
  13. Surround yourself with people who encourage and support you! 
  14. Go out an explore new things! 
    • I live in a small town and it can get extremely boring. But, I try to find different events that I find interesting or new places to go explore. 
  15. Don’t wait around for people to do stuff you want to do. 
    • If no one wants to try a new restaurant or want to go somewhere that interest you just go alone! I know, it feels weird to go somewhere alone for the first time, especially a restaurant. But trust me, it’s not as awkward or weird as you would think. I’ve met some pretty cool people this way.  
  16. Find that perfect skincare routine! It’s a life saver I promise. 
  17. Find ways to relax after a long day! 
    •  Whether it’s drinking a nice glass of wine while taking a bubble bath or binge-watching your favorite Netflix show. It’s a good idea to unwind so you don’t get burnt out. 
  18. Don’t overwork yourself! 
    • Coming from someone who used to work 40+ hours a week or sometimes would work 11 days in a row, it’s not a good feeling. You don’t want to burn yourself out and drain all your energy.
  19. Don’t let your relationship dictate your life. 
  20. Talk to your roommate about things that upset you! 
    • If you live with a roommate make sure you talk out your problems. You don’t want to hold everything in and then have a huge fight over something that wasn’t even worth fighting for. Believe it’s emotionally draining, and you could end up losing a friend over it.
  21. Create an easy budget that you can maintain and stick too. 
    • This is something I have just started to doing about 3 months ago. And let me tell you, it actually helps. I created it all using excel and it is extremely easy to make.  
  22. You’re never too young to start saving for retirement. 
  23. It’s okay to move back in with your parents!
    • I moved back in with my parents right after graduation. I’m lucky enough to get a job close to home, so I didn’t want to spend a large amount on rent if I didn’t have to. This is also helping me save money so I can eventually move to a big city.
